Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by the accumulation of more than 5% of fat in the liver, not attributed to alcohol consumption or the use of certain medications. The condition affects individuals who are obese, diabetic, suffer from dyslipidemia, advanced age, genetically inclined to the disease.
The disease progression includes liver inflammation and scarring, which, if left untreated, can potentially lead to liver failure and even liver cancer. Fatty liver disease can lead to complications such as development of type 2 diabetes, increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, renal failure, and the potential for other types of cancers, such as colon cancer. Recent studies have also indicated that fatty liver can also be caused by hepatitis infection.
Currently there are no approved medications for treating this disease. However, lifestyle modifications including a healthy diet and regular exercise are the frontline approach to managing and potentially reversing the disease.

However, it is possible that these liver complications can be managed with vitamin E supplement. Vitamin E has demonstrated potential for reducing inflammation and damage in the liver, possibly due to its antioxidant properties. Tocotrienol which is a group of chemicals under the vitamin E family has demonstrated to penetrate the liver tissue better. Several researches has supported the use of vitamin E in treating NAFLD:
Researchers from the Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases discovered that doses of vitamin E reduces fat accumulation, inflammation and degeneration of the liver. 43% of 247 participants in the study who were treated with vitamin E showed improvements in their condition compared to only 19 percent of those who received a placebo.Furthermore, the improved liver conditions is are reinforced by the detection low levels of alanine transaminase (ALT), a liver enzyme.
This clinical trial was conducted among 173 NAFLD patients aged 8 to 17. The outcome of the study shows reduction in liver degeneration and patients who are treated with vitamin E displayed significant improvement in liver function.
This study evaluates the effectiveness of delta-tocotrienol, a form of vitamin E, as a supplement in the treatment of NAFLD. Researchers discovered that the supplement is generally safe and well tolerated among patients with fatty liver. No adverse effects were reported and results suggest a reduction in biomarkers indicating NAFLD such as aminotransferase Moreover, ultrasonography tests indicated a significant reduction in fatty acid accumulation.
